French Army Chief Warns of Possible Clash with Russia Before 2030
Mandon Calls for National and Military Preparedness
ISTANBUL — France’s Chief of the Defense Staff, Fabien Mandon, reiterated on Tuesday that the country must prepare for a potential military confrontation with Russia before 2030.
In an interview with Ouest-France, Mandon said that Russia is reorganizing its military forces. Therefore, France must maintain readiness for any future conflict.
“I know Russia is rebuilding its military capability to engage NATO countries. We must prepare for this,” he said.
Previous Warnings and Intelligence Insights
This statement follows Mandon’s October address to the Defence Committee, where he highlighted that the French military must be ready for a clash within three to four years. The confrontation could begin as hybrid warfare or escalate into more direct combat, according to broadcaster BFMTV.
He explained that a combination of intelligence reports and observable military activity led him to this conclusion. This assessment is widely shared by France’s key allies, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Training and Exercises to Strengthen Readiness
Mandon emphasized that the armed forces regularly conduct major exercises to improve preparedness. He also announced Orion 2026, a large-scale exercise involving military units, allied nations, and civilian organizations. Such exercises ensure coordinated national defense in case of conflict.
He added, “A clash of this nature requires more than just the military. The entire country must be involved. Russia knows our strength lies in unity. If it succeeds in dividing us, it can win.”
Moral Rearmament and National Unity
The army chief stressed that moral preparation of citizens is as important as military readiness. He encouraged all French citizens to remain aware and engaged.
“Moral rearmament is as crucial as military rearmament,” Mandon said. National unity, awareness, and discipline are key to defending France.
