Supply Restrictions During Peak Travel
Aviation fuel supplier Air BP has introduced temporary fuel restrictions at several airports in Italy due to increased Easter travel and ongoing global tensions. The company confirmed that these measures will remain in place until April 9.
The affected airports include Bologna Airport, Milan Linate Airport, Treviso Airport, and Venice Airport. Airlines have been informed that fuel distribution will be limited during this period.
Priority for Essential Flights
Air BP stated that priority will be given to essential operations, including air ambulance services, government flights, and long-haul flights lasting more than three hours. Meanwhile, other flights will receive reduced fuel allocations.
Cause Linked to High Demand
According to Pierluigi Di Palma, head of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, the supply issue mainly results from heavy travel demand during the Easter period rather than disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
However, he warned that if the ongoing regional conflict continues, it could affect fuel supply in the future.
Regional Tensions Add Pressure
Tensions in the Middle East have increased since military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February. The conflict has led to significant casualties and retaliatory strikes by Tehran.
In addition, Iran has restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route. While current airport fuel issues are not directly linked to this disruption, experts warn that prolonged instability could impact global fuel supply chains.
