G7 Reaffirms Backing for Ukraine on Fourth Anniversary of War
HAMILTON, Canada – February 24, 2026
Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) renewed their strong support for Ukraine on Tuesday as the war between Moscow and Kyiv entered its fourth year.
In a joint statement, the heads of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States stressed their “unwavering support” for Ukraine. They stated that Ukraine has the right to defend its territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence, and freedom.
Support for Peace Efforts
At the same time, the leaders expressed support for Donald Trump and his efforts to launch a peace process. According to the statement, these efforts aim to bring Ukraine and Russia to direct talks.
Furthermore, the group emphasized that Europe must take a leading role in the peace process, while other partners also contribute. However, they noted that only Ukraine and Russia can ultimately reach a peace agreement through good faith negotiations.
Energy and Financial Assistance
In addition, the G7 confirmed continued financial and material assistance to help Ukraine manage the winter season. Members have shipped more than 2,500 generators and other critical energy equipment.
The leaders also pledged over €500 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, strengthening the country’s energy system during ongoing attacks.
Nuclear Safety and Humanitarian Support
Beyond military and financial aid, the G7 committed to ensuring nuclear safety. The group will raise funds to repair and rehabilitate the containment arch at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Moreover, the leaders backed international efforts to secure the immediate, safe, and unconditional return of Ukrainian children to their families.
