UN Appoints Pekka Haavisto as New Envoy for Sudan
HAMILTON, Canada – February 24, 2026
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Pekka Haavisto as his new personal envoy for Sudan, the UN confirmed on Tuesday.
Haavisto replaces Ramtane Lamamra, whose term has concluded. In its statement, the UN chief thanked Lamamra for his dedication and continued efforts to support peace in Sudan.
Experience in Diplomacy and Mediation
Haavisto brings wide experience in politics and international relations. He served as Finland’s foreign minister from 2019 to 2023 and currently holds a seat in the Finnish parliament.
Moreover, he has strong experience in mediation and negotiation, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. His background in conflict resolution is expected to support diplomatic efforts in Sudan.
Earlier in his career, Haavisto worked with the European Union as Special Representative for Sudan. Between 2005 and 2007, he took part in the Darfur peace negotiations. This previous involvement gives him direct knowledge of Sudan’s political and security challenges.
Ongoing Crisis in Sudan
Meanwhile, Sudan continues to face a severe internal conflict. Since April 2023, fighting between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has caused widespread violence.
According to UN reports, the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and forced around 13 million to flee their homes. As a result, the country now faces one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises.
