IWO JIMA – U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth joined senior officials from the U.S. and Japan to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of World War II’s most intense and pivotal conflicts.
Remembering the Sacrifice
The battle, fought from February 19 to March 26, 1945, saw 80,000 troops engaged in brutal combat, with 26,000 lives lost. Hegseth reflected on the immense sacrifice, calling the visit a “pilgrimage to hallowed ground.”

Hegseth highlighted the bravery of both American and Japanese forces, emphasizing the enduring warrior ethos and commitment to duty that defined the battle.
