High Tides and Low Pressure Raise Flood Risk in Vancouver

Storm Surge Threat Prompts Flood Warning Along B.C. Coast

Coastal Flooding Alert Issued for B.C.’s South Coast

Authorities have issued a coastal flooding alert for British Columbia’s South Coast this weekend, covering Metro Vancouver and parts of southern Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada announced the alert on Thursday, warning that unusually high tides combined with low atmospheric pressure could lead to minor to moderate flooding along coastal areas.

Water Levels Expected to Reach Four-Year High

According to the City of Vancouver, coastal water levels are forecast to reach their highest point in the past four years. As a result, low-lying coastal regions face an increased risk of flooding.

Officials urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

Weather and Tidal Conditions Driving the Risk

Environment Canada said the region is entering a period of high astronomical tides. This timing coincides with the Earth’s closest approach to the Sun, known as perihelion, while a low-pressure weather system moves across the coast.

As atmospheric pressure drops, seawater expands and rises. This effect can push water levels above normal tidal predictions, increasing the likelihood of coastal flooding.

Highest Flood Risk Expected on Sunday

Forecasters expect the greatest flooding risk on Sunday. However, they cautioned that uncertainty remains around the exact path and timing of the low-pressure system.

Environment Canada said it will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as the situation develops.
