Canada Supports Venezuelans’ Right to Choose Their Future
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reaffirmed Canada’s support for the Venezuelan people’s right to determine their own future following the capture of Venezuela’s president by U.S. forces.
Carney made the remarks on Saturday evening after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier that day.
Canada Rejects Maduro’s Legitimacy
In a statement shared on social media, Carney said Canada has not recognized Maduro’s government since the disputed 2018 presidential election. He described that vote as illegitimate and said it failed to reflect the will of the Venezuelan people.
As a result, Carney said Canada welcomes any opportunity that could lead to greater freedom, democracy, peace, and economic stability in Venezuela.
Call for Peaceful and Lawful Transition
At the same time, the prime minister stressed that Canada continues to support a peaceful and negotiated transition led by Venezuelans themselves. He emphasized that any political change must respect democratic principles and the wishes of the population.
Carney also urged all parties involved to uphold international law and avoid actions that could further destabilize the country.
