Hungary Withdraws from International Criminal Court Amid Netanyahu’s Visit

Hungary becomes first European nation to exit ICC following arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister.

Hungary has announced its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official visit to Budapest. Netanyahu, who faces an ICC arrest warrant over alleged war crimes in Gaza, praised Hungary’s move as “bold and principled.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized the ICC as a “politicized organization” and confirmed that Hungary would not enforce the arrest warrant against Netanyahu. The formal withdrawal process is set to begin, making Hungary the first European country to exit the ICC.

This decision has sparked concerns over the legitimacy and support for the ICC, particularly given its dependence on European nations for funding and political backing. The situation highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics, with Hungary aligning itself with Israel amid ongoing international scrutiny over actions in Gaza.
