China voiced its “shock” on Thursday following India’s condemnation of a horrific attack that claimed at least 15 lives in Louisiana, USA. A truck barreled through New Orleans’ French Quarter early on New Year’s Day, leaving 35 others injured. The region, known for its vibrant tourist traffic and New Year’s Eve festivities, became the scene of chaos as the attacker deliberately rammed the vehicle onto a crowded sidewalk, bypassing a police barricade. Despite the presence of hundreds of officers, the violence unfolded at 3:15 a.m. local time.
In a statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning expressed condolences for the victims, denouncing the attack as a violent act of terror aimed at civilians. “We oppose all forms of terrorism,” she said, extending sympathy to the grieving families and those hurt in the tragedy.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi swiftly condemned the assault, calling it a “cowardly terrorist act.” On social media platform X, Modi shared his thoughts and prayers for the victims, urging strength and comfort for those affected.
The FBI is investigating the attack, noting that the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar from Texas, may not have acted alone. Authorities have yet to determine the full extent of his connections or motivations.
