A patient safety review is underway after a 48-year-old man, Jason Kennedy, had the wrong leg amputated at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Kennedy had been scheduled for the amputation of his right leg due to a bone infection but woke up to find his left leg below the knee had been removed instead. Kennedy had been experiencing pain and infection in his right foot, which was in worse condition. He said he was initially in disbelief when he discovered the error but chose to forgive those involved.
Kennedy’s case is part of an investigation by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to identify what went wrong. The authority has apologized to Kennedy and is reviewing the incident. Kennedy, who has diabetes, expressed concern over his future, as he was already struggling with mobility. He hopes speaking out will prevent similar mistakes in the future and believes he should be compensated for the error. His family, particularly his mother, also called for accountability and support for Kennedy, including prosthetics to help him adapt to life after the amputation.
