Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held meetings on Wednesday in Tehran with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam al-Sabbagh. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the context of regional cooperation and opposing US and Israeli influence in the Middle East.
In his meeting with Al Thani, Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of speeding up the implementation of agreements previously made between Iran and Qatar. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening relations, with Al Thani announcing that Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani plans to visit Iran in early 2024. This visit is expected to further boost economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.
In his talks with al-Sabbagh, Pezeshkian highlighted the need for Iran and Syria to collaborate more closely, particularly to counter the regional strategies of Washington and Tel Aviv. Both sides discussed ways to align their diplomatic efforts and bolster cooperation in the face of external pressures, especially US sanctions. Al-Sabbagh underscored Syria’s intention to strengthen coordination with Iran, acknowledging that enhanced ties could help mitigate the adverse effects of the sanctions on both countries.
The meetings reflect the ongoing efforts by Iran to solidify its relationships with key Middle Eastern allies, particularly in the face of growing pressure from the West. By fostering closer ties with Qatar and Syria, Iran seeks to strengthen its regional influence and challenge the broader geopolitical strategies of its adversaries, especially in the context of the volatile Middle Eastern landscape.
