Mexico Suggests 1% of Military Spending for Reforestation

At the G20 summit in Brazil, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed dedicating 1% of global military spending to fund an ambitious reforestation program. This initiative aims to allocate $24 billion annually, with the goal of planting trees across 15 million hectares—an area four times the size of Denmark. Sheinbaum stressed that this program would combat climate change and poverty while fostering peace. The plan includes empowering 6 million tree planters and is seen as a step beyond Mexico’s ongoing “Sowing Life” reforestation initiative. Sheinbaum also met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss global collaboration.
