Broadcasters Announce Eurovision Boycott

BBC Supports Israel’s Participation in 2026 Eurovision Amid Broadcasters’ Boycott

LONDON: The BBC has backed the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) decision to allow Israel to compete in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, even as four European broadcasters announced plans to boycott the event.

National broadcasters from Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia said they will not take part in next year’s competition after the EBU cleared the Israeli broadcaster KAN to participate.

A BBC spokesperson said, “We support the collective decision made by members of the EBU. This is about enforcing the rules of the EBU and being inclusive.”

The decision drew criticism from some British lawmakers. Independent lawmaker Adnan Hussain called for a boycott, stating, “Boycott Eurovision for platforming genocide.” Labour MP Zarah Sultana also urged the UK to follow other countries’ lead, describing Israel as a “genocidal apartheid state” and saying the UK should not treat it as “business as usual.”

During the EBU General Assembly in Geneva, a majority of members voted to permit Israel’s participation in next year’s contest, which is scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria.

Following the vote, Spanish broadcaster RTVE announced it would neither participate in nor broadcast Eurovision 2026, accusing Israel of using the contest for political purposes. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS cited Israel’s participation, ongoing humanitarian issues in Gaza, and restrictions on press freedom as reasons for its withdrawal.

Ireland’s RTE also withdrew, citing humanitarian concerns in Gaza and attacks on journalists as incompatible with its values. RTV Slovenia similarly confirmed its non-participation. Chairwoman Natalija Gorscak said, “Our message is: we will not participate in the ESC if Israel is there — on behalf of the 20,000 children who died in Gaza.”
