UN Urges Tanzania to Safeguard Freedoms Ahead of Independence Day Protests
GENEVA: The United Nations human rights office has called on Tanzanian authorities to protect fundamental freedoms ahead of planned Independence Day protests. Officials warned that bans, arrests, and heightened security measures could increase tensions in the country, which is still recovering from post-election unrest.
A UN spokesperson highlighted the importance of allowing citizens to exercise their rights to peaceful assembly and expression. “Authorities should ensure that demonstrations remain safe and that restrictions do not fuel further instability,” the spokesperson said.
Tanzania has recently seen a surge in security operations and detentions targeting opposition supporters and activists. The UN cautioned that such measures, if excessive, risk escalating conflicts rather than maintaining public order.
The upcoming Independence Day events have drawn attention from international human rights groups, which emphasize the need for balanced security approaches. The UN stressed that protecting freedoms is crucial to avoid a repeat of past violence and to foster dialogue between the government and citizens.
The spokesperson added, “Peaceful demonstrations are a vital part of democratic life. Suppressing them through arbitrary arrests or excessive restrictions undermines public trust and could aggravate tensions.”
With national celebrations approaching, the UN urged Tanzania to respect international human rights standards while ensuring the safety of all participants. Officials called for restraint and encouraged authorities to engage in open communication with organizers of the protests.
