Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has called for immediate de-escalation in the Middle East during a high-level phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.
In a statement shared on the platform X, Tajani emphasized the urgency of diplomatic engagement to contain rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. He stressed that sustained instability could have far-reaching global consequences.
A key focus of the discussion was the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global energy supplies. Tajani warned that prolonged disruption could threaten economic stability and food security, particularly in vulnerable regions such as Africa.
He also expressed firm opposition to any potential military dimension of Iran’s nuclear program, describing it as a “red line” that could trigger a dangerous arms race across the region.
In addition, Tajani urged Tehran to leverage its regional influence to reduce tensions, including efforts to curb hostilities involving Hezbollah and to support diplomatic solutions aimed at stabilizing Lebanon.
Italy, he noted, remains committed to supporting international peace initiatives by maintaining open dialogue with all parties and promoting long-term regional stability.
The diplomatic exchange comes amid ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis, which escalated following military confrontations earlier this year and led to the closure of vital maritime routes. Although a ceasefire remains in place after mediation efforts, negotiations toward a lasting agreement continue.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump recently signaled dissatisfaction with the progress of talks, highlighting the challenges facing diplomatic efforts.
