KRG Reaffirms Neutral Stance
Nechirvan Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, said the Kurdish region of Iraq will not take part in ongoing regional conflicts and will continue supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at lowering tensions.
According to an official statement, Barzani made the remarks during a phone conversation with Abbas Araghchi. The discussion focused on regional developments and relations between Iran and the Kurdistan Region.
Talks Focus on Regional Stability
During the call, both officials reviewed ties between Iran and the KRG. In addition, they discussed the latest developments in the Middle East and their possible consequences. Both sides stressed the importance of preserving peace and maintaining stability across the region.
Barzani emphasized that the Kurdistan Regional Government “will not be part of the conflicts.” Instead, he said the region will continue to promote peace by supporting diplomatic initiatives that aim to ease tensions and protect civilians from the threat of war.
Border Security and Regional Cooperation
Furthermore, the two leaders highlighted the need to maintain strong border security. They warned that instability could increase if outside actors attempt to exploit the region.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the conversation also covered recent regional developments, including the consequences of military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Condolences and Diplomatic Relations
Barzani also expressed condolences to Iran for the lives lost in the attacks. At the same time, he reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to maintaining friendly relations with Tehran.
Araghchi, for his part, said the military actions had increased insecurity across the Middle East and could also produce wider global consequences.
Escalation of Regional Conflict
The two sides also explored ways to strengthen cooperation between Iran and the Kurdistan Regional Government. Their discussion included collaboration within the framework of the Iran Iraq Security Cooperation Agreement. The agreement aims to improve border security and prevent external groups from exploiting the region to create instability.
Meanwhile, large-scale attacks by Israel and the United States against Iran have continued since Saturday. According to reports, the strikes have killed at least 926 people, including senior military figures and individuals close to Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran has launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as Gulf countries that host US military facilities.
