Kyiv Proposes Diplomatic Path to Restore Trade

Zelenskyy Offers Ukraine Support to Reopen Hormuz

Zelenskyy Signals Ukraine’s Readiness to Help Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Kyiv Offers Support but Awaits Formal Request

Istanbul
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday that Ukraine is ready to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping has been disrupted following recent US and Israeli military actions against Iran.

However, he clarified that Kyiv has not yet received any official request. He stressed that only coordinated international efforts can effectively restore safe passage through the waterway.

Speaking on the platform X, owned by Elon Musk, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had already signaled its willingness to engage in discussions with the United States and Middle Eastern countries regarding the issue.

Diplomatic Approach Preferred

Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of diplomacy. He noted that negotiations to reopen the strait could continue alongside ongoing conflict in the region. According to him, a diplomatic solution would benefit all parties involved.

Comparison to Black Sea Grain Corridor

He compared the current situation to the Black Sea grain corridor, which allowed Ukraine to resume grain exports from the port city of Odesa during the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zelenskyy suggested that a similar approach could help ease disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and support global trade.

Military Option Also Considered

At the same time, he outlined a possible unilateral strategy. This approach would involve securing the strait through military means, including escorting vessels, deploying interceptors, and using advanced electronic warfare systems.

Rising Regional Tensions

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran. The attacks have killed more than 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military bases. These actions have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted global energy markets.
