Alberta Wildfire Forces Backcountry Evacuations

A rapidly growing wildfire continues to burn through Alberta’s western foothills, forcing evacuations across remote backcountry areas as emergency crews battle the out-of-control blaze.

The wildfire in Alberta, located in Clearwater County northwest of Sundre, expanded quickly after it was discovered Thursday. Officials said strong winds linked to a severe spring storm accelerated the fire’s spread, which now covers more than 10 square kilometres.

The blaze is burning roughly five kilometres north of the James-Wilson Provincial Recreation Area and near the Highway 584 junction in southern Clearwater County.

Emergency authorities ordered the evacuation of campers, motorists and all backcountry users within a 10-kilometre zone surrounding Highway 734 near the affected area. Access to the region has also been restricted until further notice.

Officials warned that the evacuation zone must remain clear to ensure the safety of firefighters and emergency responders, particularly as the May long weekend marks the start of the summer camping season.

The county has issued both wildfire and evacuation alerts covering properties west of Range Road 80 and north of the James River. Residents in nearby areas have not yet been ordered to leave but are being advised to remain prepared for a possible evacuation at short notice.

James Wilson Provincial Recreation Area, including the James-Wilson Campground, has been fully evacuated and closed indefinitely, according to Alberta Parks.

Melissa Story, a provincial wildfire information officer, said RCMP officers assisted with evacuation operations and continue monitoring the restricted zone. She urged the public to respect road closures and stay away from the affected region for their own safety and to allow firefighting efforts to continue without disruption.
