Germany Presses Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Global Energy Concerns
Germany has renewed its demand for Iran to restore unrestricted navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, warning that ongoing disruption is threatening global energy stability.
Speaking in Berlin, Friedrich Merz said Tehran must stop using regional tensions as leverage and called for an end to actions that he said are impacting both the region and the wider world.
Merz stressed that Iran’s nuclear program must be verifiably dismantled and warned against any further attacks on Israel or allied countries in the region.
He made the remarks during a joint press briefing with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, following discussions with Donald Trump on the escalating Iran situation.
According to Merz, both Berlin and Washington share a common goal of reaching a negotiated settlement to avoid further escalation.
German officials have repeatedly highlighted that the ongoing US-Israel-Iran tensions are directly affecting Europe’s energy security and industrial performance.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy artery responsible for a significant share of the world’s oil and gas shipments, has faced growing disruption amid the wider regional conflict.
Analysts warn that continued instability in the waterway could have severe consequences for global energy markets and economic stability, particularly in Europe.
