On September 11, 2024, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich visited the Jordan Valley, where they were briefed on the region’s security challenges by top military officials, including IDF Deputy Chief-of-Staff Maj.-Gen. Amir Baram and Jordan Valley Brigade Commander Col. Aviv Amir.
During the visit, the Prime Minister inspected seized weapons and military capabilities of the units active along the Israel-Jordan border. Addressing the soldiers of the Kfir Brigade and the Prison Service’s Masada Unit, Netanyahu acknowledged the difficult security situation, expressing condolences for the loss of two IDF fighters in Rafah that day.
Netanyahu emphasized the importance of securing Israel’s eastern border with Jordan, a “border of peace” maintained through cooperation with the Kingdom of Jordan. However, he warned of increasing efforts to smuggle terrorists and weapons into Israel through the Jordan Valley. Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to constructing stronger barriers to prevent smuggling, ensuring that the border remains peaceful and secure.
