Canada UK and France Face Backlash Over Embassy Address Changes to Palestine
Embassy Websites Trigger Controversy
Canada, the United Kingdom, and France are facing criticism after their embassy and consulate websites in Israel briefly listed “Palestine” in official addresses. The updates sparked political backlash and gained widespread attention on social media amid the ongoing Israel–Palestine conflict.
Canada Embassy Listing Draws Criticism
Global Affairs Canada updated its website to describe the Tel Aviv embassy as being located in “Palestine,” according to the Toronto Sun. The page originally listed “Israel and Palestine” before officials corrected it within hours. Liberal MP Anthony Housefather confirmed he contacted the department, prompting the quick fix.
UK Consulate Address Change
The UK Foreign Office faced similar scrutiny after its Consulate General in Jerusalem added “Palestine” to the bottom of the address. Previously, the location was described as “East Jerusalem.”
Alex Hearn, director of Labour Against Antisemitism, condemned the move: “The UK government erased Israel’s capital even on the Jewish New Year.”
France Joins the Controversy
France also updated the address of its consulate in West Jerusalem to include “Palestine.” This change drew criticism from local and international observers.
Social Media Reaction
The embassy updates quickly went viral on social media, attracting thousands of reactions. X user Dan Levy wrote: “This is nuts, and of note, they’re doing it all on Rosh HaShanah when a large portion of the Jewish community is offline.”
Critics Call Changes Politically Charged
Observers described Canada’s temporary listing, “Tel Aviv, Israel, Palestine,” as geographically confusing. Critics argued the changes were a political statement rather than a factual update, implying that all of Israel was being labeled as Palestine.
