PM Shehbaz Meets Trump and Global Leaders at 80th UNGA
Meeting with US President
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will meet U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The meeting is scheduled for 4:30 PM EST (1:30 AM Pakistan time) at the Oval Office.
The leaders will discuss shared interests, regional stability, and ways to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.
Partnership with Gates Foundation
PM Shehbaz also met Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, during UNGA in New York. He said polio eradication remains a top priority and praised the foundation for supporting health, nutrition, financial inclusion, and flood relief in 2022 and 2025.
He highlighted Pakistan’s economic reforms, digital initiatives, and efforts to boost growth. Both sides agreed to continue cooperation in health, nutrition, digital transformation, and socio-economic development.
Climate Finance and Green Initiatives
At a special climate event led by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of Brazil, PM Shehbaz urged the global community to honor climate finance commitments. He said debt-driven funding alone cannot tackle the climate crisis facing vulnerable nations like Pakistan.
Recalling the devastating 2022 floods, he noted that losses exceeded $30 billion and millions were displaced. He warned that this year’s monsoon rains have already affected over five million people, destroyed 4,100 villages, and claimed more than 1,000 lives.
Strengthening Ties with Bangladesh
PM Shehbaz met Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to constructive regional ties. They discussed ways to boost trade, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.
Professor Yunus welcomed Pakistan’s proactive engagement and highlighted the importance of stronger cultural and trade links.
Renovated Consular Services in New York
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar inaugurated the upgraded Consular Services Area at Pakistan’s New York Consulate, established in 1948. He stressed the government’s commitment to providing overseas Pakistanis with efficient and dignified services.
The consulate now offers a 24-hour emergency helpline, online appointment system, improved NADRA services, a Punjab Land Record kiosk, upgraded call systems, online Power of Attorney, regular E-Kachehris, community town halls, and enhanced cultural and economic outreach.
Consul General Aamer Ahmed Atozai thanked Senator Dar, saying the upgrades will ensure smooth services and better community support.
Bilateral Meetings During UNGA
Senator Ishaq Dar also held meetings with international leaders, including Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared updates on social media.
