UN Adopts Resolution to Protect Peacekeepers

UN Moves to Strengthen Accountability for Peacekeeper Attacks

UN Security Council Unanimously Adopts Resolution to Strengthen Protection of Peacekeepers

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution aimed at improving accountability for attacks against UN peacekeepers and strengthening mechanisms to investigate and prosecute such crimes.

The resolution, co-sponsored by Pakistan and Denmark and supported by more than 100 UN member states, was approved by all 15 members of the Security Council.

According to UN figures, over 1,000 peacekeepers have been killed in hostile incidents since 1948, including several hundred deaths in recent years, with many others injured while serving in peace operations worldwide.

Speaking before the vote, Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the Council must move beyond expressions of concern and adopt practical steps to ensure accountability for attacks on peacekeepers. He emphasized the importance of structured reporting on investigations and prosecutions related to such incidents.

Denmark’s UN ambassador Christina Markus Lassen welcomed the resolution’s adoption, describing it as a strong signal of support for more than 50,000 peacekeepers currently deployed in global missions. She also highlighted cooperation between Denmark and Pakistan in advancing the initiative.

The resolution condemns all attacks on UN peacekeepers, recognizes that such acts may constitute war crimes, and calls for stronger cooperation between host countries and the United Nations in investigating and prosecuting offenders.

It also requests regular reporting by the UN Secretary-General on accountability measures and reinforces the responsibility of national authorities to bring perpetrators to justice under international law.
