During a speech concluding an IDF combat officers training course at Bahad 1 near Mitzpe Ramon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s capability to prevent Hezbollah attacks is more crucial than any ceasefire agreements in Lebanon. He stated that while agreements and UN Security Council resolutions have their significance, the primary focus must be on ensuring security and countering threats, regardless of external pressures.
Netanyahu asserted that Israel has successfully targeted Iran’s “soft underbelly” in recent military operations, claiming that the nation now enjoys greater operational freedom in Iran than ever before. He reiterated that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) remain committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, although he refrained from revealing specific plans for achieving this objective.
He characterized the fight against Iran as guided by a “total victory concept,” outlining clear military goals without setting a definitive timeline for the conflict’s conclusion. Addressing criticisms of military management since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023, Netanyahu defended the IDF’s strategy of initially concentrating on Hamas in Gaza before shifting attention northward.
Netanyahu remarked on the ongoing shift in the strategic landscape of the Middle East while acknowledging Israel’s precarious situation. He expressed gratitude for U.S. support, clarifying his willingness to accept assistance but asserting the need for autonomy in decision-making.
He criticized those advocating for a hasty diplomatic solution in Lebanon before significant military objectives were achieved, such as dismantling Hezbollah’s tunnel network and neutralizing its leadership. Notably, he mentioned that over half of the hostages taken during the October 7 Hamas attack have been rescued, emphasizing the importance of discreet efforts for the remaining captives.
In closing, Netanyahu praised IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi for his leadership.
