ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their shared commitment to regional peace and stability following a fresh wave of military escalation, as senior diplomats from both countries pledged to continue close coordination amid ongoing US-Iran negotiations.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Friday to discuss the evolving regional situation following recent military strikes.
During the call, Dar reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to playing a constructive role in promoting peace, dialogue, and regional stability. He emphasized Pakistan’s support for diplomatic engagement and efforts aimed at preventing further escalation in the Middle East.
Araghchi thanked Pakistan for its continued backing of the peace process and expressed appreciation for Islamabad’s assistance in facilitating the safe repatriation of Iranian fishermen and crew members who recently returned home through Pakistan.
Both ministers agreed to maintain regular communication as diplomatic efforts continue to address regional security challenges and support ongoing negotiations.
The conversation followed US military strikes on Iranian missile, drone, and radar installations after Washington accused Tehran of involvement in an attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran later responded through its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), announcing retaliatory strikes against US military positions across the region while warning that any further escalation would trigger a stronger response.
Despite the renewed tensions, diplomatic efforts remain underway. Earlier this month, Iran and the United States reached a 14-point memorandum of understanding through Pakistani mediation. The agreement, which entered into force on June 18 after being signed electronically by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump, established a framework for reducing hostilities and continuing negotiations.
The understanding includes provisions related to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing maritime restrictions, reducing regional hostilities, and pursuing a broader peace agreement through a 60-day negotiation process.
Pakistan has continued to position itself as a facilitator of dialogue, emphasizing diplomacy as the preferred path toward reducing tensions and achieving lasting peace across the region.
