Pakistan Warns India Against Using Water as a Weapon Amid Indus River Dispute
Pakistan has issued a stern warning to India against using water as a tool of political leverage, as tensions rise over the potential disruption of the Indus River’s flow.
Speaking in Islamabad, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry emphasized that weaponizing shared water resources could have long-lasting and destabilizing consequences. He urged restraint and warned that tampering with the Indus Waters Treaty would not only harm regional stability but could also ignite future conflict.
“Pakistan prioritizes peace and regional cooperation,” said Lt Gen Chaudhry. “We reject violence, but any attempt to compromise our water security will be met with a firm response.”
The warning follows reports suggesting New Delhi may consider altering the flow of the Indus River, which is governed by the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty—an agreement considered a cornerstone of South Asian water diplomacy.
