Pope Leo XIV Calls on Leaders to Choose Peace Over War
Easter Message Appeals for Dialogue
In his first Easter Sunday address since becoming pope last May, Pope Leo XIV urged global leaders to choose peace instead of war. Speaking from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, he called on those holding weapons to lay them down and seek dialogue over domination.
“Let those who have weapons lay them down! Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace! Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue! Not with the desire to dominate others, but to encounter them!” Pope Leo said.
Warning Against Global Indifference
The pontiff highlighted the growing global acceptance of violence. He warned that people have become indifferent to the deaths caused by conflict and to the social and economic consequences of hatred and division.
“There is an ever-increasing ‘globalization of indifference,’” he said. “We cannot continue to be indifferent! And we cannot resign ourselves to evil!”
Call for Abandoning Conflict and Power
Pope Leo urged humanity to reject the desire for conflict, domination, and control. He asked the faithful to pray for peace in a world scarred by wars, hatred, and indifference, emphasizing that only a peaceful dialogue can bring true reconciliation.
