EU Warns Middle East Escalation Could Threaten Region

Strikes in Middle East Raise Regional and Global Concerns

BRUSSELS

The European Union on Sunday cautioned that recent events following repeated strikes in the Middle East must not escalate further, as this could endanger the region, Europe, and beyond, creating unpredictable consequences.

EU foreign ministers convened an emergency video conference to assess the situation in Iran and the broader region. Afterward, the bloc issued a statement expressing “deep concern” over the unfolding developments.

“The situation in Iran must not escalate in a way that could threaten the Middle East, Europe, and beyond, with unpredictable impacts, including on the economy. It is essential to prevent disruptions to critical maritime routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement read.

The EU called for “maximum restraint,” the safeguarding of civilians, and strict adherence to international law, including the United Nations Charter and humanitarian law.

“The Middle East would suffer significant losses from any prolonged conflict,” it warned.

The bloc denounced Iran’s attacks and violations of several countries’ sovereignty, urging Tehran to avoid indiscriminate military strikes.

It also expressed support for regional partners affected by the violence and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability and protecting civilian lives.

The EU stated that it has already imposed broad sanctions on Iran over human rights abuses, its ballistic missile and nuclear programs, and backing of armed groups in the Middle East. The bloc added: “We will continue to safeguard EU security and interests, including through additional sanctions if necessary.”

The EU noted that it remains in close coordination with regional partners to promote de-escalation and will continue to engage in diplomatic initiatives to reduce tensions and ensure lasting regional security.

The United States and Israel carried out an attack on Iran on Saturday, killing several senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran launched a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, US assets, and several Gulf nations.
