Swiss Police Launch Negligent Homicide Probe After Deadly Bar Fire
Authorities investigate operators following New Year’s inferno
BERNE — Swiss police have opened a criminal investigation into the operators of a bar where a fire during New Year’s celebrations killed 40 people and injured 119, many of them critically. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that they were notifying relatives as they began identifying the victims.
Focus of Investigation
Police said their inquiry focuses on several potential safety violations, including the use of champagne sparklers, the venue’s capacity limits, and the building materials. Investigators aim to determine whether negligence by the bar operators contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
Officials emphasized that the investigation seeks to establish accountability while clarifying the circumstances that led to one of Switzerland’s deadliest fires in recent history.
