BERNE — Swiss police have opened a criminal investigation into the operators of a bar where a fire during New Year’s celebrations killed 40 people and injured 119, many of them critically. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that they were notifying relatives as they began identifying the victims.

Police said their inquiry focuses on several potential safety violations, including the use of champagne sparklers, the venue’s capacity limits, and the building materials. Investigators aim to determine whether negligence by the bar operators contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
