Over 7,000 Canadians Evacuated From Middle East Amid Regional Conflict
OTTAWA
Anita Anand announced on Tuesday that more than 7,000 Canadians have left the Middle East since the recent escalation in the region.
Evacuation Numbers and Routes
Among them, over 4,300 Canadians, permanent residents, and their relatives returned to Canada between March 4 and March 8 via both direct and indirect routes.
Anand emphasized that the government will continue providing options for Canadians wishing to leave the region. “While we encourage Canadians to depart through commercial means, we will offer support through block bookings, charter flights if needed, and bus routes,” she said.
Current Assistance Efforts
Global Affairs Canada reported that daily calls for help have dropped to about half of last week’s volume. Additionally, 871 individuals have been relocated to safe third countries such as Turkey.
Despite the unrest triggered by Donald Trump’s airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28, Global Affairs Canada confirmed that it is not aware of any Canadians killed or injured during the conflict.
As of Sunday, fewer than 5% of the nearly 110,000 Canadians registered in the region have requested assistance.
