Mass Protests Erupt in Canary Islands Over Impact of Overtourism
Thousands of residents across Spain’s Canary Islands took to the streets on Sunday, demanding urgent action to address the negative effects of mass tourism. Demonstrations were held in multiple locations, including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.
Police reported approximately 3,000 protesters in Gran Canaria, 1,500 in Lanzarote, and 1,000 in Fuerteventura. The largest rally occurred in Tenerife, where crowds called on local and national authorities to prioritize sustainability, protect natural resources, and regulate tourism-driven development.
The protests come as Spain anticipates another record-breaking year for tourism, raising concerns among locals about environmental degradation, housing shortages, and pressure on public services.
Activists argue that unchecked tourism is threatening the islands’ ecological balance and cultural identity. They are urging lawmakers to implement policies that balance economic benefits with long-term sustainability.
