Pro-EU Candidate Nicușor Dan Wins Romanian Presidency with 54% of Vote
Nicușor Dan, an independent reformist and the current mayor of Bucharest, has been elected President of Romania after winning 54% of the vote in a decisive runoff election. His victory marks a significant shift toward a pro-European future for the country.
Dan defeated right-wing nationalist George Simion, a vocal supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump and a critic of both the European Union and NATO. Despite leading in the first round, Simion lost momentum after a high-stakes televised debate, where Dan’s composed and reform-focused performance won over undecided voters.
Celebrating his victory, Dan praised the Romanian people and called for unity and economic reform. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized the need for change, promising a presidency focused on transparency, accountability, and European integration.
This election outcome is seen as a signal of Romania’s continued alignment with Western institutions amid a shifting European political climate.
