Washington, D.C. – The Trump administration has released a list of 103 jurisdictions in the U.S. state of Illinois that it claims are not fully cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.
The list includes 96 counties and seven cities identified as so-called “sanctuary jurisdictions”—a term used by the administration to describe areas that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. According to officials, these jurisdictions allegedly obstruct U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations by refusing to hold or transfer individuals based on immigration detainers.
The move is part of the administration’s broader efforts to pressure local governments into complying with federal immigration policies. Supporters argue it enhances national security, while critics say it undermines community trust and local law enforcement autonomy.
The Department of Homeland Security released the list as part of an ongoing push to publicly name jurisdictions that, in its view, create barriers to immigration enforcement.
The announcement is likely to intensify the ongoing national debate over immigration policy and federal versus local authority in the United States.
