U.S. and Egypt Strengthen Defense Ties in Call Between Defense Chiefs

Secretary Hegseth and Egypt’s Defense Minister Discuss Red Sea Security and Houthi Threats to Global Trade

April 8, 2025

Washington, D.C. — In a reaffirmation of strategic military cooperation, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth held a phone call with Egypt’s Minister of Defense, General Abd-al-Majid Ahmad Saqr, on April 8, 2025, to strengthen the U.S.-Egypt defense partnership and address key regional security concerns.

According to Defense Press Operations Director Col. Chris Devine, the two leaders emphasized their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and discussed mutual interests in maintaining regional stability. A central topic of the call was the security of the Red Sea and the increasing threat posed by Iranian-backed Houthi militants.

Both defense officials expressed concern over the Houthis’ destabilizing activities, which have disrupted operations in the Suez Canal—a critical global trade route—and harmed the broader international economy.

The conversation underscores the ongoing collaboration between the United States and Egypt in countering regional threats and protecting vital maritime infrastructure.
