UK and France Conduct Joint Strike on ISIL Weapons Site in Syria

Targeted attack avoids civilian areas

LONDON — The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that Royal Air Force aircraft joined French forces in a precision strike on an underground facility near Syria’s historic city of Palmyra. The site was reportedly used by the ISIL (ISIS/Daesh) group to store weapons, as intelligence indicates the militant group is showing signs of resurgence after a period of reduced activity.

The MoD emphasized that the targeted area was “devoid of any civilian habitation,” and the joint operation successfully neutralized the threat without harming nearby populations.

Operation Details

The strike took place late Saturday night, with British and French aircraft coordinating to ensure accuracy and minimal collateral impact. In a statement, the UK Ministry of Defence said: “Royal Air Force aircraft have completed successful strikes against Daesh in a joint operation with France,” referring to ISIL by its Arabic acronym.

The underground facility was identified through intelligence gathering as a significant hub for the storage of weapons and munitions, which could have been used to support future attacks.

Strategic Context

The joint operation reflects the continued cooperation between Western allies in countering ISIL activity in Syria and the broader region. Although the group had previously been weakened, analysts warn that pockets of fighters remain capable of regrouping and posing security threats.

The UK and France stressed that they remain committed to targeting terrorist infrastructure while avoiding civilian casualties, consistent with international law and operational protocols.
