UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for stronger global partnerships with Africa, stressing that countries rich in the continent’s mineral resources should be the primary beneficiaries.
Speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, Guterres highlighted that Africa holds vast reserves of critical minerals essential for renewable energy but remains largely excluded from the economic gains.
“The countries hosting these resources must benefit first and add value to local and global supply chains,” he said.
Guterres praised Africa’s potential, pointing to its young population, abundant resources, and entrepreneurial spirit. He noted that despite its renewable energy capacity, Africa receives only 2 percent of global investment in renewables, and nearly 600 million people live without electricity.
The UN chief also called for reforms in global governance, including permanent African representation on the Security Council and greater influence in international financial institutions. “Africa must have a stronger voice in shaping its future,” he added.
He urged bold action on debt relief, emphasizing that 34 countries currently spend more on debt servicing than on health and education.
The three-day TICAD summit brings together leaders from about 50 African nations and international organizations. Guterres also met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss UN reforms, nuclear disarmament, and Expo 2025 preparations.
