NATO has confirmed it is in active discussions with United States to gain clarity on Washington’s decision to reduce its military presence in Germany.
Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart stated via the platform X that consultations are ongoing to better understand the scope and implications of the troop adjustment.
She emphasized that the move reinforces the urgency for European nations to strengthen their own defence capabilities and assume a larger role in maintaining regional security. According to her statement, the alliance remains confident in its collective ability to sustain deterrence while transitioning toward a more self-reliant Europe within NATO’s framework.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon confirmed plans to withdraw nearly 5,000 American troops from Germany, signaling a notable shift in US military strategy across Europe.
Earlier remarks by Donald Trump revealed that Washington is reviewing its broader military footprint in Germany, particularly amid growing disagreements within NATO regarding US involvement in tensions with Iran.
The issue gained further traction after Friedrich Merz publicly criticized the United States for lacking a clear strategy in its confrontation with Iran, warning that such uncertainty could undermine diplomatic efforts and weaken the alliance’s standing.
This development reflects deeper strategic recalibrations within NATO, as Europe faces mounting pressure to boost defence investment while adapting to shifting US priorities.
