Trump Pledges Retaliation After IS Attack Kills Americans in Syria
Attack on US Personnel in Palmyra
DAMASCUS — Two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed on Saturday in central Syria when an alleged Islamic State gunman attacked a joint U.S.-Syrian patrol, officials confirmed. Three other American troops sustained injuries during the incident, which occurred in the city of Palmyra.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the Middle East, said the gunman was engaged and killed.
US Response
President Donald Trump vowed retaliation, stating outside the White House, “We will retaliate.” He later added on Truth Social that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was “extremely angry and disturbed by this attack.”
Context of the Operation
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the attack happened while the soldiers were conducting a “key leader engagement” as part of counter-terrorism operations. Syrian state media had earlier reported the assault, confirming injuries to both American and Syrian personnel.
