US Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that Washington has entered a new stage in its conflict with Iran, with economic pressure becoming the main instrument the US intends to use to achieve its goals.
Speaking during an interview with The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, Vance said the United States believes economic measures are currently the most effective way to pressure Iran and indicated that Washington plans to continue the strategy.
He explained that increasing oil and gas supplies could help reduce pressure on American consumers by lowering energy costs while simultaneously putting greater economic pressure on Iran. According to Vance, this could influence Tehran’s decisions and encourage it to reconsider its actions.
Vance acknowledged that the approach carries risks because Iran could attempt to impose economic costs on the United States in response. However, he maintained that the US believes sustained economic pressure offers the best opportunity to achieve its objectives.
His comments came shortly after the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control added 10 individuals to its sanctions list related to Iran.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also announced Thursday that Washington intends to introduce what he described as the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran.
Bessent said the US was working with its allies to create an extensive international campaign aimed at isolating Iran economically. He described the planned cooperation as an unprecedented level of coordinated economic pressure.
