Veronica III Stopped in Indian Ocean Operation

US Intercepts Sanctioned Oil Tanker Veronica III

US Forces Board Sanctioned Oil Tanker Veronica III in Indian Ocean

Pentagon Confirms Maritime Operation

US military forces conducted a boarding of the sanctioned oil tanker Veronica III overnight in the Asia-Pacific region, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Sunday. The operation occurred within the Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) area and concluded without incident.

The Pentagon stated that the vessel attempted to “defy President Donald Trump’s quarantine,” but US forces tracked it from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, intercepted the ship, and successfully halted its movement. “We will deny illicit actors and their proxies freedom of movement in the maritime domain,” the department added.

Sanctions Background

Veronica III is listed on the U.S. Treasury Department Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) sanctions list for transporting Iranian oil illegally on behalf of the National Iranian Oil Company and China Concord Petroleum Company.

The Panama-flagged tanker, built in 2006 and previously named Symphonic, Veronica, and White Nova, is affiliated with Shanghai Future Ship Management Co Ltd, which Washington sanctioned in December 2024 for its involvement in Iran’s oil sector.

Part of Ongoing Maritime Operations

This boarding follows similar US actions in the region, including the earlier interdiction of the crude oil tanker Aquila II. The Pentagon has emphasized its commitment to enforcing sanctions and preventing unauthorized shipments of Iranian oil.

The operation demonstrates Washington’s continued focus on tracking and intercepting vessels involved in illicit oil trade, aiming to uphold international sanctions and maintain control over maritime security.
