World Bank to Aid Pakistan Combat Smog

The World Bank has partnered with the Pakistani government to tackle the growing issue of air pollution, particularly smog, in Islamabad and other major cities. This collaboration aims to develop strategies to mitigate the severe air quality challenges that have worsened over recent years, significantly impacting public health.

The World Bank will provide technical assistance to strengthen the capacity of Pakistan’s environmental agencies, enhance monitoring systems, and improve pollution management frameworks. Islamabad, along with cities like Lahore, regularly experiences high pollution levels, especially during the winter months, with smog becoming a hazardous issue for residents. The project aims to reduce harmful emissions from various sources, including vehicles and industrial activities, while promoting cleaner technologies.

According to government sources, air quality in Pakistan’s urban areas often deteriorates to hazardous levels, with particulate matter (PM2.5) surpassing safe thresholds. In response, the World Bank’s initiative will focus on improving enforcement of environmental regulations, encouraging greener energy alternatives, and raising public awareness about the dangers
