8 Hospitalized, 70-Vehicle Pileup Shuts Down I-25 in Colorado

A massive pileup involving approximately 70 vehicles shut down a major stretch of Interstate 25 in Colorado on Saturday, sending eight people to the hospital.

The incident occurred near Wellington, just south of the Wyoming border, amid deteriorating weather conditions. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the chain-reaction crashes were triggered by a combination of high winds, blowing snow, and icy road surfaces that reduced visibility to near zero.

First responders arrived to find a chaotic scene of tangled cars and jackknifed semi-trucks stretching across the highway. While eight individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment, officials confirmed that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening—a result many are calling fortunate given the scale of the wreckage.

Maintenance crews worked for hours to clear the debris and treat the road surface. The northbound lanes remained closed well into the evening as tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles.
