President Herzog Commends Emergency Response During Visit to Shamir Medical Center’s Underground Facility

President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog visited Shamir Medical Center on Monday to observe its emergency operations amid ongoing security threats. Formerly known as Assaf Harofeh, the center is among Israel’s largest hospitals and is currently functioning under full emergency protocols.
The presidential couple was welcomed by Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach, CEO of the medical center. They toured the advanced underground emergency hospital and a reinforced maternity ward—previously a fitness center—now repurposed to ensure the safety of patients and staff during the current conflict.
During their visit, President Herzog and his delegation spoke with medical professionals about the difficulties of working under constant threat. They also met with patients injured in recent rocket attacks and observed the hospital’s fortified surgical theaters operating at maximum capacity.
“I am proud to return to Shamir Medical Center, a leading institution both in Israel and globally,” said President Herzog. “I was truly impressed by the rapid emergency preparations, the dedication of the medical teams, and the efficient transformation of this underground facility led by Dr. Levtzion-Korach.
“Meeting the mothers and families in the fortified maternity ward, who symbolize hope amidst the challenges of war, was deeply moving and highlights the resilience of Israeli society,” he added.
First Lady Michal Herzog also praised the efforts of the hospital staff. “Your compassion for patients and your commitment to safeguarding them under such stressful conditions is inspiring,” she said. “We were here during the early days of the Swords of Iron conflict, and once again, we see the dedication in your vital work.”
Dr. Levtzion-Korach expressed gratitude for the visit and voiced her hopes for a peaceful resolution. “In healthcare, we must always prepare for the worst,” she said. “That includes not just treatment but full emergency readiness. Thanks to our dedicated staff, the hospital has continued to provide uninterrupted care—even when it meant transforming an underground parking lot into a functioning hospital within hours.”
