President Herzog Delivers Eulogy for Fallen Israeli-American Soldier Itay Chen

Jerusalem, November 10, 2025 — President Isaac Herzog delivered a eulogy today at the funeral of Staff Sergeant Itay Chen, a fallen Israeli-American soldier. Chen’s body was returned to Israel after more than two years in Hamas captivity.

Honoring a National Hero

Speaking on behalf of the nation, President Herzog expressed deep sorrow, admiration, and gratitude for Chen’s courage, values, and devotion to Israel.

“Beloved Itay Chen, hero of Israel,” the President said, “after more than two years of waiting and pain, you have finally returned home. Today, we stand together to honor a hero whose story inspires the entire nation.”

Herzog emphasized the ongoing mission to return all hostages, including Staff Sergeant Lior Roedef and others still held by Hamas. “Every name brought home reminds us of those still waiting. We have a sacred duty to bring them all back,” he added.

Tribute to Itay’s Character and Family

The President praised Itay Chen’s character, describing his determination, love for his nation, and sense of mission. He also acknowledged the dedication of Chen’s parents, Rubi and Hagit, and his brothers Roee and Alon. The family postponed mourning until his return and campaigned tirelessly across the globe to secure his release.

Herzog highlighted their diplomacy, stating, “Rubi and Hagit led an extraordinary campaign, engaging world leaders and advocating for Itay. Their determination never wavered. Itay was our soldier, and I am your soldier.”

Acknowledging International Support

The President commended international efforts that facilitated Chen’s return, led by U.S. President Donald Trump. He noted the strong alliance between Israel and the United States, grounded in shared values of human dignity, freedom, and peace.

Herzog contrasted moral integrity with Hamas’ actions, stating, “This is a battle between civilization and terror. Every last hostage must come home for a dignified burial.”

Call for Accountability and Unity

President Herzog reiterated Israel’s duty to protect its citizens and stressed the importance of a State Commission of Inquiry to answer unresolved questions since October 7. He urged the nation to heal and unite, emphasizing the need to move past political divisions.

Concluding the eulogy, Herzog addressed the Chen family directly: “Rubi, Hagit, and family, on behalf of the entire nation, we bow our heads in awe and gratitude. We will remember Itay forever and honor his bravery and devotion.”
