Macron Stresses Europe-US Unity on Ukraine
PARIS, Dec 5 – French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized on Friday that a united front between Europe and the United States is crucial for supporting Ukraine. He dismissed reports suggesting he believed the U.S. could betray Ukraine, saying there is “no mistrust.”
During a visit to China, Macron told reporters, “Unity between Americans and Europeans on the Ukrainian issue is essential. I repeat this often: we need to work together.”
He also welcomed U.S. efforts to promote peace, noting, “We support the peace initiatives led by the United States. At the same time, the U.S. needs Europe’s involvement to make these efforts effective.”
The remarks came after German magazine Spiegel cited a confidential transcript in which Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz allegedly expressed doubts about U.S. efforts to mediate a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
Responding to the report, Macron firmly denied the claims. “I deny everything. We need the United States for peace, and they need us to ensure the peace is lasting and strong,” he said.
Macron’s comments highlight his call for a collaborative approach, stressing that both Europe and the U.S. must work hand in hand to achieve a durable resolution in Ukraine.
