Israel and Germany Explore New Peace and Defense Initiatives

Netanyahu Highlights Shared Security Goals in Talks with Merz

Netanyahu and Merz Discuss Security Cooperation and Regional Peace Prospects in Jerusalem

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Jerusalem on Sunday, marking Merz’s first visit to Israel as chancellor. Netanyahu said that his conversations with Merz are always “open and honest,” even when their views differ, and that the two leaders share mutual respect.

Shared Security Interests

Netanyahu highlighted Germany’s long-standing moral and strategic commitment to Israel’s security after the Holocaust. He added that the balance has shifted in recent years, with Israel now also contributing to Germany’s defense. He described this as a historic change during a period of global instability.

Both leaders discussed strengthening defense cooperation and expanding joint work in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum research, and deep-tech innovation. Netanyahu said that Israel and Germany, as two highly developed economies, can drive progress that benefits not only their own citizens but also the wider region.

Regional Stability and Peace Efforts

Netanyahu expressed optimism about new opportunities for peace in the Middle East following the weakening of the Iran-backed regional axis. He said he would also raise these issues in his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

He stressed that Israel must bring an end to Hamas’ rule in Gaza to secure long-term stability. Netanyahu noted that Israel is close to completing the first phase of its campaign, which includes recovering the bodies of hostages. The next phase will focus on the disarmament of Hamas, followed by efforts to reduce extremist ideology in Gaza—an approach he compared to historical examples in Germany, Japan, and Gulf states.

Challenges of Antisemitism

Netanyahu warned that antisemitism has re-emerged in many parts of the world. He criticized public demonstrations supporting Hamas and rejected accusations of Israeli war crimes. He emphasized that Israel is fighting a just war and noted that Hamas intentionally endangers civilians.

He told Merz that while Israel cannot control global narratives, it has fundamentally changed Jewish history by ensuring that attempts to destroy the Jewish state will not succeed.

The Palestinian State Debate

Addressing the issue of Palestinian statehood, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s opposition to a Palestinian state that could threaten its security. He argued that Gaza previously served as a base for attacks on Israel and said Israel will continue to maintain security control from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.

Looking Ahead

Netanyahu said he believes Israel is entering a new era defined by expanding regional peace and rapid technological advancement. He expressed hope that Israel and Germany can play a leading role in global innovation. He concluded by inviting Chancellor Merz to return to Israel with his wife on a future visit.
