Italy and Ukraine Discuss Next Steps for Peace in Rome Meeting

Leaders Review Peace Negotiations

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday at Palazzo Chigi in Rome. The leaders assessed ongoing negotiations aimed at achieving a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine and discussed the next steps needed to advance the diplomatic process.

Support for Ukraine’s Energy Sector

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Italy for emergency supplies recently sent to strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid ongoing Russian strikes targeting civilian facilities. Both leaders highlighted the crucial role of European and American unity in ensuring long-term security for the continent.

Security Guarantees and Diplomatic Pressure

Meloni and Zelenskyy emphasized the need for credible security guarantees to prevent future aggression. They also stressed maintaining steady pressure on Russia to engage in negotiations in good faith, aiming for a sustainable resolution to the conflict.

Italy’s Continued Assistance

Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people and pledged continued support, including contributions to Ukraine’s eventual reconstruction. Separately, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed full backing for Ukraine in response to recent escalations of Russian attacks on civilians.

Tajani confirmed that Italy’s 12th military aid package is in progress, along with additional supplies and generators to help Ukraine’s population and energy sector. He reiterated that Rome remains firmly committed to supporting Kyiv.
