Tondelier Condemns Growing Acceptance of Racist Rhetoric After Deadly Shooting in France
ISTANBUL — October 24, 2026
Marine Tondelier, leader of France’s Green Party (Les Ecologistes) and a presidential candidate, on Saturday criticized the growing acceptance of racist language in television broadcasts and political discussions following a deadly shooting in Trappes and La Verrière.
The incident occurred on Thursday in Trappes, leaving one person dead and five others seriously injured, including a 12-year-old girl.
Tondelier said racist statements made by politicians and aired on television had increasingly become commonplace, warning that such rhetoric could have dangerous consequences.
“We saw yesterday how dangerous their rhetoric is,” she said, urging people who use racist language to stop.
She stressed that every life lost in France deserved equal condemnation and expressed concern over what she described as the silence of certain political figures following the shooting.
Tondelier called on those responsible for such remarks to acknowledge their impact and commit to ending them, emphasizing that racism can lead to deadly consequences.
She also highlighted the case of the 12-year-old girl, who was reportedly shot eight times. Tondelier argued that repeated exposure to racist rhetoric could shape attitudes and contribute to violence and tragic incidents.
French President Emmanuel Macron described the shooting as a “racist terrorist attack” and called for measures to combat racism in all its forms.
