US Calls for Global Support in Syria’s Transition and Reconstruction
Washington Urges Collective Action
The United States has called on the international community to actively support Syria’s political transition and rebuilding efforts. Speaking at a UN Security Council session, US Special Envoy Tom Barrack urged countries to contribute to stabilizing the war-torn nation.
He highlighted that Syria has undergone major changes over the past 15 months, including the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime and the formation of a new government.
Millions Return Home
Moreover, Barrack pointed to a significant humanitarian development. He stated that more than two million refugees and internally displaced people have returned to their homes.
As Ramadan comes to an end, many families are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in Syria for the first time in years. This return, he said, marks a hopeful step toward national recovery.
Sanctions Relief Opens Opportunities
In addition, recent international measures have helped improve conditions in Syria. Barrack noted that the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2799, which supports Syria’s sovereignty and unity.
At the same time, authorities removed sanctions on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. This group previously played a key role in opposing Assad’s forces and is now linked to Syria’s current leadership under Ahmad al-Shara.
According to Barrack, these steps have created new opportunities for Syrians to rebuild their lives and economy.
Focus on Security and Reconstruction
Furthermore, Barrack encouraged all nations to support Syria in several key areas. These include strengthening counterterrorism efforts, investing in reconstruction projects, and repatriating foreign nationals from detention camps.
He stressed that coordinated global support will help ensure long-term stability.
US Pledges Continued Support
Meanwhile, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Syria during this transition period. Barrack praised the progress made since December 2024 and expressed confidence in Syria’s future.
He stated that Washington aims to help Syria become a stable and peaceful nation both domestically and internationally.
UN Leadership Role
Currently, the United States holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for March. As a result, it continues to play a leading role in shaping discussions on Syria’s future.
