Highly Destructive Explosives Found Near Serbia–Hungary Gas Pipeline

Authorities Respond to Threat

Serbian authorities discovered highly destructive explosives near a gas pipeline linking Serbia and Hungary, President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday. He informed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of the initial findings during a phone call.

The suspicious objects were located near the villages of Velebit, Tresnjevac, and Vojvoda Zimonjic in the municipality of Kanjiza, close to critical energy infrastructure, according to local media.

Security Measures and Investigation

Authorities deployed around 140 police and military personnel to the area. Roadblocks have been established, and search operations are ongoing both on the ground and from the air, with helicopters providing aerial surveillance.

Investigators found explosive materials along with devices needed for activation. Prosecutor Mladenka Manojlovic Gajin confirmed that two backpacks containing roughly four kilograms of suspected plastic explosives and assembly materials were discovered on the road between Gornji Breg and Vojvoda Zimonjic.

She classified the incident as a criminal offense involving illegal production, possession, carrying, and trafficking of weapons and explosives in connection with diversion attempts. Authorities stated they would continue investigations to locate the responsible individuals.

Hungarian Officials React

Hungarian authorities confirmed Serbia’s discovery and held an extraordinary defense council meeting. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto emphasized that the pipeline is vital for Hungary’s gas supply and condemned any attempt to threaten it.

“We strongly reject any attack on our sovereignty. Threats to energy security cannot be seen as anything other than attacks on national sovereignty,” Szijjarto said in a statement released by government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs on X.

The Turkish Stream pipeline remains a key element of energy security for both Serbia and Hungary, and officials pledged close cooperation during the ongoing investigation.
